Researchers at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) are working to explore the three-dimensional (3D) form of graphene as the next generation of electronic materials. Researchers at MIPT won the Nobel Prize in 2010 for graphene research. Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov discovered the "3D form of graphene" once predicted by the German physicist Hermann Weyl, calling it "Weyl Semimetal." 3D graphene is expected to carry electrons in it, but without protons - just like photons - making it one of the most promising new ways to achieve superconducting conductivity on the surface of topological materials. Bulk electron spectra in Weyl semimetal formed by even conical pyramids converging on a particular point in momentum space (Data Source: MIPT) Geim and Novoselov utilized topological field theory to characterize the behavior of massless but charged Weyl particles on Weyl semimetallic surfaces, the results of which are published in the journal Physical Review. Weyl Fermion, a term more precise than a particle, means that it follows statistical rules and possesses a semi-integral spin. After Hermann Weyl finally worked hard to find it (Hermann Weyl died in 1995), it was finally found in 2015 Weyl semi-metallic micro-crystal surfaces are known to date. Next, Prof. Zhanna Devizorova, MIPT, and Zhanna Devizorova, a Ph.D. candidate, unravel the topological equation that predicts the shape of Fermi Arcs (Weyl Fermi scattering) on the crystal surface. Igor Tamm, a 1930's Nobel laureate, predicted the surface states of these electrons and derived the first theoretical model of these states. This Weyl semi-metal is faster and more energy-efficient than current electronic components, and as a result, several scientists at MIPT are now actively seeking the groundwork that will lay the groundwork for the next generation of electronic components, topologically based Weyl semi-metals. The researchers hope that Weyl semimetals will enable ultra-fast electronics and that its Weyl Fermions may be controlled by electric and magnetic fields.
