China will require civilian drones weighing more than 250g to be registered under real names starting from June 1 to improve civil aviation safety, the country's civil aviation regulator announced last Tuesday.
Registration of civilian drones is a common international practice and the foundation for better management, according to Zhang Ruiqing, deputy head of the Office of Air Traffic Regulation of Civil Aviation Administration of China.
Besides, the administration will announce protective zones around 155 airports and will develop more technical means, such as electronic fences, to keep drones away from the airports.
"Drones have become a serious hazard in many Chinese cities, and haveseverely interfered with civil aviation," Zhang said.
On May 12, more than 6,000 passengers were stranded at Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport because of flights that were diverted, returned or canceled because of drone interference.
