ABB launches new Azipod XL marine electric propulsion system

The efficiency of the new version of the system comes from a unique nozzle system that accelerates water flow into the propeller and increases propulsion. At the same time, the propeller was redesigned to reduce water resistance.

Since its first shipment 25 years ago, the ABB Azipod propulsion system has operated more than 12 million hours, saving more than 700,000 tons of fuel.

As a standard in the marine industry, the Azipod propulsion system is a gearless steering propulsion system that uses an electric drive motor located on the outside of the hull and can be operated in 360 degrees for a variety of ship types.

As part of the next level of strategy, Azipod XL represents the biggest leap in electric propulsion systems in recent years. Replacement in the next 25 years After all existing systems, the shipping industry will also save an additional 2.2 million tons of fuel and reduce 7 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions."

It is reported that the Azipod XL concept can be designed as a low-speed high-column tension and also works well at high speeds, so it is suitable for ships such as tugboats and offshore engineering vessels, as well as for ferries and LNG carriers.
